Your Company Has an Accountant. But Who Is Managing Your Finances?
Table of Contents
As a company grows, the sales team usually expands, headcount increases, new assets are acquired, new branches are opened, and bank credit limits are raised.
The accounting department naturally grows as well.
However, in many businesses, one role remains vacant for a long time:
The actual management of finance.
Because while accounting and financial management may seem very similar, they are not the same thing.
Accounting primarily records the business's completed transactions, reports them, ensures regulatory compliance, and presents the company's financial statements.
Financial management, on the other hand, asks different questions:
What will the company's cash position be in the next 3, 6, and 12 months?
Which customers are financing the company, and which ones is the company actually financing?
Are bank credit limits being used correctly?
Is the maturity and cost structure of debts healthy?
Is the company truly profitable, or is it losing cash while growing?
Is it the right time for a new investment?
How much capital is tied up in inventory?
How much do exchange rate and interest rate fluctuations affect the company?
Which product, branch, or activity is actually generating money?
And perhaps most importantly:
Based on the financial figures in front of them today, what decision should the business owner make for the next six months?
This is where the need for an independent financial management function alongside accounting begins.
Why does a profitable company face cash shortages?
The fact that a profit appears on a business's income statement does not mean that the same amount of cash is in the bank.
Sales may increase, but if collection periods lengthen, the company's financing needs may also grow.
Inventory may increase.
Customers may pay late.
Loan installments may pile up in the same period.
An open foreign exchange position may arise.
New investments may consume working capital.
As a result, a company can face a cash crunch even while it is growing.
OECD studies also emphasize that, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises, cash flow and financial management capacity are critical for company growth and access to finance.
Therefore, in company management, asking only:
“How much profit did we make this month?”
is no longer sufficient.
The real question is:
“Where will our money come from and where will it go in the coming months?”
Does every company need a full-time Finance Director?
No.
Perhaps this is the most important point of the matter.
Many businesses that have reached a certain size need professional financial management; however, hiring a full-time Finance Director may not be economically or operationally necessary for every company.
Instead, an external financial consultant or a fractional Finance Director model that can look at the business independently from management and the accounting department can be implemented.
This structure is not an alternative to the company's accountant or financial advisor.
On the contrary, it is a second layer that transforms the financial data they produce into management decisions.
While accounting reveals the answer to the question “What happened?”, financial management focuses primarily on:
“Why did it happen, what will happen next, and what should we do?”
What should good financial management track?
Professional financial management is not just about checking the bank balance.
Company management should regularly have the following dashboard in front of them:
Cash flow projection
Accounts receivable and aging report
Debt and payment schedule
Bank credit and limit structure
Financing costs
Foreign exchange position
Budget vs. actual comparison
Profitability by branch, product, or activity
Inventory and working capital analysis
Investment feasibility studies
Alternative financing scenarios
Financial risks
3, 6, and 12-month financial forecasts
But above all of this, there is a much more important output:
A simple and understandable decision-making dashboard for management.
Because what a business owner needs is not a hundreds-of-rows Excel file;
it is the answer to the question:
“What should I pay attention to today?”
Financial management must grow as companies grow
In a business, revenue growth alone is not an indicator of success.
Uncontrolled growth can mean;
more receivables,
more inventory,
higher credit usage,
greater currency risk,
and a higher need for working capital.
Therefore, as a company grows, financial decisions must be made based on forward-looking scenarios, not just past period figures.
OECD studies also highlight the relationship between financial planning, sound financial management, and reliable financial data with businesses' access to finance and investment capacity.
Perhaps your company doesn't need a new employee, but a new perspective
Some companies need to hire a Finance Director.
Others need an experienced financial manager to independently evaluate the company's figures for specific periods each week or month.
The title is not what matters.
What matters is that the business owner can see the answers to these questions in time:
Where is my money?
How much cash will I need in the coming months?
Am I paying the bank more than necessary?
Which of my businesses is actually making money?
If I make this investment, what will my cash position be in six months?
What is the financial risk I don't see today?
Because companies often struggle not on the day a financial problem arises, but due to decisions made months ago.
The task of good financial management is not to explain the numbers after a problem has occurred;
it is to present them to management before the problem arises.
